Solistenkonzert: Helsinki Police Symphonic Band

October 8 @ 19:00 20:30

The Helsinki Police Band’s concert features an exceptional combination of young talent and fresh, internationally recognized compositions. Taking the stage is Swiss saxophonist Simon Fluri, whose versatile expression ranges from Bach transcriptions to the latest in contemporary music. Fluri is known as a powerful interpreter who continually discovers new and fascinating sonic possibilities on the saxophone. He has performed extensively throughout Europe, and now his intense presence comes into its own in Oliver Waespi’s new work – a world premiere.

Swiss composer Oliver Waespi is one of today’s most highly regarded European composers of wind music. His music is known for its rhythmic energy and his ability to draw inspiration from both urban landscapes and early music. The new work was written specifically for Fluri, and the Helsinki Police Band is one of its three commissioning orchestras. The piece combines virtuosic solo playing with the orchestra’s multidimensional soundscape in a manner characteristic of Waespi.
